A total of 2.49 million goods vehicles travelled from Great Britain to mainland Europe in the 12 months ending in the third quarter of 2011 – 1% higher than the same period a year ago.

According to the latest Department for Transport figures, 1.82 million of these were HGVs – up 2% on the equivalent quarter in 2010, while 666,000 were unaccompanied trailers, down 1%.

However, during the third quarter of 2011 itself, a total of 601,000 goods vehicles travelled from Britain to Europe – down 3% on the same period last year.

Of these, 437,000 were HGVs and 164,000 unaccompanied trailers. This was down 2% and 5% respectively on the third quarter of 2010.

The statistics include all the main ferry routes between Great Britain and mainland Europe. Ferry routes between Great Britain and Northern Ireland or the Republic are not included.
