McAllisters Recovery closes its doors after nearly 40 years

Surrey-based recovery firm McAllisters Recovery has ceased trading after nearly 40 years in the business.

The family-run haulier, which specialised in roadside assistance and commercial and light vehicle recovery, ceased trading on 3 July with the loss of 40 jobs.

Managing director Mark McAllister told that an “unviable public sector contract” contributed to the firm’s collapse. It held contracts with Surrey Police and the Highways Agency, as well as carrying out call-out work for operators and the general public.

McAllister said: “We looked for a number of alternative options including selling the company as a going concern, but it was just not possible.”

The business was established in 1974 and grew to operate 42 vehicles across three sites in Chobham, Guildford and Leatherhead in 2013. Its fleet included heavy trucks and light vans, as well as cars and motorbikes which were used to assess the recovery operation.

It is understood that the company began experiencing financial difficulty in 2011, according to its most recent accounts, when it relocated its premises following its acquisition of another Guildford recovery firm, All Recovery and Repair.

A creditors meeting will take place on 1 August, when Jeffery Brenner of BC Associates is expected to be appointed as liquidator.

The liquidator was unable to comment.
