A11 widening to begin in January

A two-year project to upgrade the last remaining single carriageway section on the A11 will start in January, roads minister Stephen Hammond has announced.

The Fiveways to Thetford dualling and improvement scheme will widen 5.5 miles of the A11, a key route between the M11 and Norwich, and involve a new 3.6 mile bypass around the village of Elveden.

“The new bypass and widening of the A11 will bring significant benefits for the economy, road users and local people by improving road safety and removing bottlenecks,” said Hammond in announcing the project.

The scheme, which the Department for Transport estimates will cost between £94m-£113m and will involve lane or carriageway closures, is not scheduled for completion until December 2014. Preparatory works which will also require lane or carriageway closures begin this month.
