Transport for London calls for operators’ views on proposed river crossings

Transport for London (TfL) has called for feedback on proposals to create new river crossings serving the capital.

Following an initial consultation in February, it is inviting feedback on the developed proposals that could see a new road tunnel introduced at Silvertown to relieve pressure on London’s Blackwall Tunnel.

The Silvertown Tunnel would be designed to accommodate vehicles of all sizes, eliminating the problem with over–height lorries causing delays at Blackwall.

TfL is also looking at the possibility of introducing a vehicle ferry linking Beckton directly with Thamesmead at Gallions Reach. This could replace the Woolwich ferry, offering increased frequency and increased capacity.

Subject to planning permission and funding, the ferry crossing could be active by 2017 with the tunnel open by 2021.

The consultation closes Febraury 2013.
