No increase in O-licence fee to fund TCs, says Beverley Bell

Senior traffic commissioner Beverley Bell says she and her colleagues must continue to be given proper resources to do their job, but that there should be no O-licence fee increase to fund this.

In the TCs’ annual report for 2011/12, Bell said that she would be holding discussions with Vosa bosses over the coming months to ensure that the TCs continue to be properly resourced and financed.

She said: “Commissioners can only be effective if we have the proper resources available to us and this is a matter that has taxed me considerably over the past 12 months.

“Commissioners understand we are in difficult economic times and remind ourselves that our work is paid for by operators – so we would not advocate a fee increase.

“I look forward to working on behalf of commissioners with Alastair Peoples [Vosa MD] and his board over the coming year to ensure that we are properly resourced and financed for without this we cannot be effective.”

  • The number of new O-licences issued in 2011-12 was 4,833, a drop on the figure of 5,233 in 2010-11.
  • A total of 322 O-licences were revoked last year compared with 365 the previous year.
