Police will have discretion over enforcement of 80mph speed limit

The government will leave speed-limit enforcement to individual police force’s discretion when it begins a trial of an 80mph speed limit next year.

In its response last week to the Transport Committee’s road safety proposals, the Department for Transport (DfT) reiterated its commitment to trial a new national speed limit on, as yet undefined, motorways where variable speed limits are in place.

“It will be for the police to consider their approach to enforcement in these locations and we will work with the Association of Chief Police Officers on this matter,” the DfT said.

A DfT spokeswoman told that a consultation exercise to examine the best locations for the 80mph trial would begin before the year’s end.

In order to carry out the proposed trial, the DfT will need to amend the Motorways Traffic (Speed Limits) Regulations 1974, via a special roads provision contained within the Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984.

The DfT has also ruled out the imposition of mandatory truck sensors to boost cycle safety.
