Eddie Stobart Doncaster drivers to hold demo by Houses of Parliament

Eddie Stobart drivers set to strike this week in Doncaster, will also hold a parallel demonstration outside former employer Tesco’s store near the Houses of Parliament.

The 180-Unite members facing redundancy are set to stage a three-day strike from Wednesday 31 October after talks between Eddie Stobart and the union collapsed last week.

Unite said around 30 drivers will also protest outside the Tesco Express in Westminster on 31 October between 11am to 1pm, in a bid to raise the profile of the dispute with MPs.

Unite regional officer Steve Clark said: “Tesco behaved disgracefully when it transferred the Tesco drivers to Eddie Stobart in August – and this betrayal of the hard working drivers needs to gain wider coverage.”

Clark added that while the union remained keen to negotiate a fair and just settlement, Eddie Stobart remained intent on “macho posturing rather than genuine negotiations”.

In total, 183 drivers based at Tesco’s Doncaster DC transferred under Tupe from the supermarket chain’s employment in August to that of Eddie Stobart.

Eddie Stobart announced in September that it would be removing the transport operation at Doncaster placing the drivers at risk of redundancy.

The operator, which last week revealed it had been hit by a fresh wave of restructuring costs for its chilled distribution business, intends to service the site with trucks from elsewhere within its national network.
